From all that South Africa has offered during these weeks, it must be said that the people have had the greatest impact on us. Friendly, open and always up for a chat is what characterize the people we've met. In Johannesburg, here in one of the not so fancy townships we came across these fellows. We witness once more that style is what matters, screw fashion and see that style comes from within you and the espirit you fire away.

The Moment

Not just another moment

Going east towards Plettenberg bay we ask what all backpackers have to ask themselves - is it that high or am I just getting old to dare the jump? No, backpackers are not excused and neither are we, age is nothing but an excuse. So down it gooees (the immense sensation of panic is really fascinating)... and further down (feels like all the blood is packed in the skull as I reach the bottom), then I'm bouncing up and down in pure ecstasy.

The Stuff

The Fearful food

As the journey has continued along the South African coastline we've scored some extra fine peelers. But surf is by the nature unpredictable. So what to do when we reach Jefferey's Bay - tha grand jewel of African surfing - and no waves are to be found? What you see on the pic is razor sharp mussels on the rocks that create amazing surf and unfortunately many cuts and scars. We made moules marinées! Fry spring oinion, garlic and parsley, add the j-bay mussels and white wine and then some cream. Serve with more wine and bread or fries. (We trust you know how to separate the good mussels from the bad ones, but just to not cause you harm: when the mussels are alive they should be closed, when ready to eat the mussels must be open. Bon apétit!

The Place

A-train to Simmonstown

The salty breeze is extra refreshing as we're traveling the most scenic route heading towards gentle surf where the Atlantic crushes into the Indian Ocean. The surroundings are too beautiful to fully appreciate, all we want is hang those five or ten toes on the nose. We hear there are pinguins here, sounds cute, but we're not the only ones finding them nice.. sharky. As northern Europe starts to fade in to shade and automn gets closer it is time to hit the southern hemisphere. Endless someone? Beaches are probably the greatest place ever made and this scenery in particular. Take a guess where we are. The warm sand and icy water is protected by the twelve apostles. This is also known as the most fancy beach in SA.....

The Moment

September Sessions

Summer's been great, right. Except all the shit. And here comes September as a second chance to do the things you talked about in April, but never did in June. The summer's not over, yet. Until fall hits we'll enjoy the days that offer another kind of freshness and crispy touch. September sessions are here.

The Place

The Buprint

Not one of those "classic" days, but who cares when the sky is as blue as an ocean.. Forecast says great swell is coming up for the Malibu Invitational.

The Stuff

Introduction for kooks

It's the 10th anniversary of the Spanish wavesliding fiesta. Introducing this year the Joel Tudor Duct Tape that gather the best log riders from Europe and the US. Sunpocket's own Clovis Donizetti is alone defending the French/Basque colours against Tudor, Knost, Abshere.. It starts at 1700 today and contiunes tomorrow. Don't be square, go there. In the Baltic sea, by the shoreline of medieval village Visby you will find "Kallbadhuset", claimed to be Europe's #1 beach club. During the short but busy summer the place gets jammed with top DJ's like Axwell and an ever partying crowd. It's fun to see that someone is still pushing for the daylight pyrotechnics and people actually get trigged by these death metal flames.
The Sonár festival was mental and as we wrote there supposed to be a competition of the best photos taken by our fellow Dj's. However the festival turned out to be much better than expected - as half of the crew lost their phones. A rather good rate in other words. This week is the celebration of the Swedish Midsummer, check it out! It's some gnarly things going on under the influence of the national drink. Sunpocket is visiting France though, to get some good waves in Pays Basque with our friends. Pays Basque, especially the pearl Biarritz is a must visit for all you guys thinking of doing an upgraded Eurotrip. Good surf, good food, amazing architecture and a striking culture. Don't hesitate just come.

The Happening

Sonár festival

Is it a new concept of an old tradition or an old way of selling aged fast food? This little fellow promise to make you a pizza from scratch, with freshly grown veggies, Italian cheese baked over open fire in a roustique metal box in two minutes. Mamma Mia, the smell could get the travelers at Bergamo's airport down on there knees, only if the thing was plugged-in. Our sunglasses are made at Mauritius, just to make that clear! So, visiting the place where we produce the sunnies couldn't be nicer. Using the same factory like 25 years ago is pretty cool and the some of the older co-workers share there stories with enthusiasm. We don't label our sunglasses as handmade though we perhaps should. This fellow is warming up the frame to easier fit the lens. Mauritius is famous for its exclusive resorts, nice water for diving and the lack of waves. So when we went to the island visiting our factory we didn't bring the boards. This nicely peeling left was just outside our house, looks so nice to shred with a log. Damn myth, much like August and Hynson coming to Tahiti in Endless Summer. At least we enjoyed some reef cutting body surfing before this shoot was taken.

The Style

Mrs. Rainbow

The Nordic Freeride Championship has come to an end, it ended up to be one of the better session witnessed with great performances from all the riders. Adam executed some gnarly 360 in his final run and our friends Christine Hargin and Stina Jacobsson ended up third and second in the women's final. Congrats girls!!

The Moment

NM Day 2, close your eyes

Day 2 offered beautiful sunshine but rather tricky snow. Skier Adam Widén is waiting by the start gate, but it's taking time since the previous skier crashed. Adam is known to ignore limits. Once Adam said that doing aerials with closed eyes is the radest feeling, it's like letting go of all control beyond instincts. Wonder if he ever closed his eyes this time?

The Happening

The Nordic Freeride Championship

When the winter is nothing but a vague memory you wish to delete, there are those who embrace the last snowflakes and head to Riksgränsen, where Norway, Finland and Sweden meet, above the polar circle. Today the Nordic Freeride Championship celebrate 20 years and Sunpocket is of course here. As usual the sun disappears just as the session start, but that didn't stop the riders who showed great courage in throwing them selves down the mountain painted in grey nuances. Our People ended up in the top positions this first qualifying day. Fingers are crossed for tomorrow..

The style

Flying high

When the Nordic Championship in Freeride is on it's all about taking the best line down the face in smoothest and hardest way. Here Jesper is showing of his skills just before the contest doing a flip over what has to be the most northern train tunnel in the world in the far north of Sweden.

The Place

Far away is close to heart

The far north is a strange place, pitch dark in the winter time and twentyfourseven sun during summer. The transformation is total and the spring is rad, just imagine a pale sun light caressing the hillside and paint the harch black mountains in apricot and peach. You don't necessary have to like to appreciate the beauty of a landscape coming in to live again.

The Style

Sunpocket & friends

Doing the Haute Route and similar expeditions means that you walk between remote huts where they serve you the alpine diet made out of cheese and red wine. Waking up is a nightmare, as the huts are not isolated and you sleep in your sweaty equipment. We only have time for a few hours of sleep since we have to move on as soon as the first light hits the mountainsides.
This legendary route stretches between Chamonix to Zermatt where we did a cut down version. Coming straight from the bustling city life down to the Alps gives a chance to experience the greatness of contrasting elements. Doing the Haute Route is a total brainfreeze in the best of sences. Being surrounded by snow-covered mountains is like a soul anthem from Otis Redding.

The Stuff

Tight on ground

It's like having a thin rabbit fur underneath your skis, smooth in one side and stiff and sticky if you caress in the other direction. Walking upwards hills is half the fun with randonné and is doable with skins. First day on the expedition and one guy on our crew puts the skins upside down so slides off the hill with panic in the eyes. This happened just after our guide says "Don't be afraid of losing grip, trust the skins.." Alpine eqip 101: Check direction of the skins....

The Moment

Reaching Gran Paradiso

Up and down and finally up again, to the top and final goal for our Haute Route/Alta Via expedition. Skis of and a final climb to what seems to be the roof top of the world. Tied up in rope we take the remaining steps and the only thing in mind at the time is not to sidestep. On the right side of the pic is a fiercing drop down and die 300 hundred meters precipice. Maybe hard to see but the relief of not being blown down the top was major. An old dream has come true and now the only thing remaining is the cold powder from top to valley.
